2026-02-12selftests/mm: add memory failure anonymous page testMiaohe Lin
Patch series "selftests/mm: add memory failure selftests", v4. Introduce selftests to validate the functionality of memory failure. These tests help ensure that memory failure handling for anonymous pages, pagecaches pages works correctly, including proper SIGBUS delivery to user processes, page isolation, and recovery paths. Currently madvise syscall is used to inject memory failures. And only anonymous pages and pagecaches are tested. More test scenarios, e.g. hugetlb, shmem, thp, will be added. Also more memory failure injecting methods will be supported, e.g. APEI Error INJection, if required. This patch (of 3): This patch adds a new kselftest to validate memory failure handling for anonymous pages. The test performs the following operations: 1. Allocates anonymous pages using mmap(). 2. Injects memory failure via madvise syscall. 3. Verifies expected error handling behavior. 4. Unpoison memory. This test helps ensure that memory failure handling for anonymous pages works correctly, including proper SIGBUS delivery to user processes, page isolation and recovery paths. 2026-01-31selftests/mm: introduce helper to read every pageKevin Brodsky
FORCE_READ(*addr) ensures that the compiler will emit a load from addr. Several tests need to trigger such a load for a range of pages, ensuring that every page is faulted in, if it wasn't already. Introduce a new helper force_read_pages() that does exactly that and replace existing loops with a call to it. The step size (regular/huge page size) is preserved for all loops, except in split_huge_page_test. Reading every byte is unnecessary; we now read every huge page, matching the following call to check_huge_file(). Assert that we observe guard regions appearing in /proc/$pid/smaps as expected, and when split/merge is performed too (with expected sticky behaviour). Also add handling for file systems which don't sanely handle mmap() VMA merging so we don't incorrectly encounter a test failure in this situation. Patch series "test that rmap behaves as expected", v4. As David suggested, currently we don't have a high level test case to verify the behavior of rmap. This patch set introduce the verification on rmap by migration. Patch 1 is a preparation to move ksm related operations into vm_util. Patch 2 is the new test case for rmap. 2025-09-13mm/selftests: fix split_huge_page_test failure on systems with 64KB page sizeDonet Tom
The split_huge_page_test fails on systems with a 64KB base page size. This is because the order of a 2MB huge page is different: On 64KB systems, the order is 5. On 4KB systems, it's 9. The test currently assumes a maximum huge page order of 9, which is only valid for 4KB base page systems. On systems with 64KB pages, attempting to split huge pages beyond their actual order (5) causes the test to fail. In this patch, we calculate the huge page order based on the system's base page size. With this change, the tests now run successfully on both 64KB and 4KB page size systems. 2025-08-27selftests/mm: fix FORCE_READ to read input value correctlyZi Yan
FORCE_READ() converts input value x to its pointer type then reads from address x. This is wrong. If x is a non-pointer, it would be caught it easily. But all FORCE_READ() callers are trying to read from a pointer and FORCE_READ() basically reads a pointer to a pointer instead of the original typed pointer. Almost no access violation was found, except the one from split_huge_page_test. Fix it by implementing a simplified READ_ONCE() instead. This series introduces a common FORCE_READ() macro to replace the cryptic asm volatile("" : "+r" (variable)); construct used in several mm selftests. This improves code readability and maintainability by removing duplicated, hard-to-understand code. This patch (of 2): Several mm selftests use the `asm volatile("" : "+r" (variable));` construct to force a read of a variable, preventing the compiler from optimizing away the memory access. This idiom is cryptic and duplicated across multiple test files. 2025-05-31selftests/mm: add helper for logging test start and resultsMark Brown
Several of the MM tests have a pattern of printing a description of the test to be run then reporting the actual TAP result using a generic string not connected to the specific test, often in a shared function used by many tests. The name reported typically varies depending on the specific result rather than the test too. This causes problems for tooling that works with test results, the names reported with the results are used to deduplicate tests and track them between runs so both duplicated names and changing names cause trouble for things like UIs and automated bisection. As a first step towards matching these tests better with the expectations of kselftest provide helpers which record the test name as part of the initial print and then use that as part of reporting a result. This is not added as a generic kselftest helper partly because the use of a variable to store the test name doesn't fit well with the header only implementation of kselftest.h and partly because it's not really an intended pattern. Ideally at some point the mm tests that use it will be updated to not need it. 2025-01-25selftests/mm: virtual_address_range: avoid reading from VM_IO mappingsThomas Weißschuh
The virtual_address_range selftest reads from the start of each mapping listed in /proc/self/maps. However not all mappings are valid to be arbitrarily accessed. For example the vvar data used for virtual clocks on x86 [vvar_vclock] can only be accessed if 1) the kernel configuration enables virtual clocks and 2) the hypervisor provided the data for it. Only the VDSO itself has the necessary information to know this. Since commit e93d2521b27f ("x86/vdso: Split virtual clock pages into dedicated mapping") the virtual clock data was split out into its own mapping, leading to EFAULT from read() during the validation. Check for the VM_IO flag as a proxy. It is present for the VVAR mappings and MMIO ranges can be dangerous to access arbitrarily. 2023-06-19selftests/mm: fix build failures due to missing MADV_COLLAPSEJohn Hubbard
MADV_PAGEOUT, MADV_POPULATE_READ, MADV_COLLAPSE are conditionally defined as necessary. However, that was being done in .c files, and a new build failure came up that would have been automatically avoided had these been in a common header file. So consolidate and move them all to vm_util.h, which fixes the build failure. An alternative approach from Muhammad Usama Anjum was: rely on "make headers" being required, and include asm-generic/mman-common.h. This works in the sense that it builds, but it still generates warnings about duplicate MADV_* symbols, and the goal here is to get a fully clean (no warnings) build here. Let's add some selftests to make sure that: * R/O long-term pinning always works of file mappings * R/W long-term pinning always works in MAP_PRIVATE file mappings * R/W long-term pinning only works in MAP_SHARED mappings with special filesystems (shmem, hugetlb) and fails with other filesystems (ext4, btrfs, xfs). The tests make use of the gup_test kernel module to trigger ordinary GUP and GUP-fast, and liburing (similar to our COW selftests). Test with memfd, memfd hugetlb, tmpfile() and mkstemp(). The latter usually gives us a "real" filesystem (ext4, btrfs, xfs) where long-term pinning is expected to fail. 2023-04-18selftests/mm: uffd_[un]register()Peter Xu
Add two helpers to register/unregister to an uffd. Use them to drop duplicate codes. This patch also drops assert_expected_ioctls_present() and get_expected_ioctls(). Reasons: - It'll need a lot of effort to pass test_type==HUGETLB into it from the upper, so it's the simplest way to get rid of another global var - The ioctls returned in UFFDIO_REGISTER is hardly useful at all, because any app can already detect kernel support on any ioctl via its corresponding UFFD_FEATURE_*. The check here is for sanity mostly but it's probably destined no user app will even use it. - It's not friendly to one future goal of uffd to run on old kernels, the problem is get_expected_ioctls() compiles against UFFD_API_RANGE_IOCTLS, which is a value that can change depending on where the test is compiled, rather than reflecting what the kernel underneath has. It means it'll report false negatives on old kernels so it's against our will. So let's make our lives easier. 2023-04-18selftests/mm: merge util.h into vm_util.hPeter Xu
There're two util headers under mm/ kselftest. Merge one with another. It turns out util.h is the easy one to move. When merging, drop PAGE_SIZE / PAGE_SHIFT because they're unnecessary wrappers to page_size() / page_shift(), meanwhile rename them to psize() and pshift() so as to not conflict with some existing definitions in some test files that includes vm_util.h.
