2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar typesKees Cook
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org>

2026-01-14drm/amdkfd: Fix SVM map/unmap address conversion for non-4k page sizesDonet Tom
SVM range size is tracked using the system page size. The range start and end are aligned to system page-sized PFNs, so the total SVM range size equals the total number of pages in the SVM range multiplied by the system page size. The SVM range map/unmap functions pass these system page-sized PFN numbers to amdgpu_vm_update_range(), which expects PFNs based on the GPU page size (4K). On non-4K page systems, this mismatch causes only part of the SVM range to be mapped in the GPU page table, while the rest remains unmapped. If the GPU accesses an unmapped address within the same range, it results in a GPU page fault. To fix this, the required conversion has been added in both svm_range_map_to_gpu() and svm_range_unmap_from_gpu(), ensuring that all pages in the SVM range are correctly mapped on non-4K systems. 2025-11-11drm/amdkfd: Fix GPU mappings for APU after prefetchHarish Kasiviswanathan
Fix the following corner case:- Consider a 2M huge page SVM allocation, followed by prefetch call for the first 4K page. The whole range is initially mapped with single PTE. After the prefetch, this range gets split to first page + rest of the pages. Currently, the first page mapping is not updated on MI300A (APU) since page hasn't migrated. However, after range split PTE mapping it not valid. Fix this by forcing page table update for the whole range when prefetch is called. Calling prefetch on APU doesn't improve performance. If all it deteriotes. However, functionality has to be supported. v2: Use apu_prefer_gtt as this issue doesn't apply to APUs with carveout VRAM v3: Simplify by setting the flag for all ASICs as it doesn't affect dGPU v4: Remove v2 and v3 changes. 2025-10-28drm/amdkfd: Fix use-after-free of HMM range in svm_range_validate_and_map()Srinivasan Shanmugam
The function svm_range_validate_and_map() was freeing `range` when amdgpu_hmm_range_get_pages() failed. But later, the code still used the same `range` pointer and freed it again. This could cause a use-after-free and double-free issue. The fix sets `range = NULL` right after it is freed and checks for `range` before using or freeing it again. v2: Removed duplicate !r check in the condition for clarity. v3: In amdgpu_hmm_range_get_pages(), when hmm_range_fault() fails, we kvfree(pfns) but leave the pointer in hmm_range->hmm_pfns still pointing to freed memory. The caller (or amdgpu_hmm_range_free(range)) may try to free range->hmm_range.hmm_pfns again, causing a double free, Setting hmm_range->hmm_pfns = NULL immediately after kvfree(pfns) prevents both double free. (Philip) In svm_range_validate_and_map(), When r == 0, it means success → range is not NULL. When r != 0, it means failure → already made range = NULL. So checking both (!r && range) is unnecessary because the moment r == 0, we automatically know range exists and is safe to use. 2025-08-15drm/amdkfd: Handle lack of READ permissions in SVM mappingKent Russell
HMM assumes that pages have READ permissions by default. Inside svm_range_validate_and_map, we add READ permissions then add WRITE permissions if the VMA isn't read-only. This will conflict with regions that only have PROT_WRITE or have PROT_NONE. When that happens, svm_range_restore_work will continue to retry, silently, giving the impression of a hang if pr_debug isn't enabled to show the retries.. If pages don't have READ permissions, simply unmap them and continue. If they weren't mapped in the first place, this would be a no-op. Since x86 doesn't support write-only, and PROT_NONE doesn't allow reads or writes anyways, this will allow the svm range validation to continue without getting stuck in a loop forever on mappings we can't use with HMM. 2024-08-23drm/amdkfd: Change kfd/svm page fault drain handlingXiaogang Chen
When app unmap vm ranges(munmap) kfd/svm starts drain pending page fault and not handle any incoming pages fault of this process until a deferred work item got executed by default system wq. The time period of "not handle page fault" can be long and is unpredicable. That is advese to kfd performance on page faults recovery. This patch uses time stamp of incoming page fault to decide to drop or recover page fault. When app unmap vm ranges kfd records each gpu device's ih ring current time stamp. These time stamps are used at kfd page fault recovery routine. Any page fault happened on unmapped ranges after unmap events is application bug that accesses vm range after unmap. It is not driver work to cover that. By using time stamp of page fault do not need drain page faults at deferred work. So, the time period that kfd does not handle page faults is reduced and can be controlled. 2024-07-24drm/amdkfd: Validate user queue svm memory residencyPhilip Yang
Queue CWSR area maybe registered to GPU as svm memory, create queue to ensure svm mapped to GPU with KFD_IOCTL_SVM_FLAG_GPU_ALWAYS_MAPPED flag. Add queue_refcount to struct svm_range, to track queue CWSR area usage. Because unmap mmu notifier callback return value is ignored, if application unmap the CWSR area while queue is active, pr_warn message in dmesg log. To be safe, evict user queue. 2024-05-29drm/amdkfd: simplify APU VRAM handlingAlex Deucher
With commit 89773b85599a ("drm/amdkfd: Let VRAM allocations go to GTT domain on small APUs") big and small APU "VRAM" handling in KFD was unified. Since AMD_IS_APU is set for both big and small APUs, we can simplify the checks in the code. v2: clean up a few more places (Lang) Acked-by: Felix Kuehling <felix.kuehling@amd.com> Reviewed-by: Lang Yu <Lang.Yu@amd.com> Signed-off-by: Alex Deucher <alexander.deucher@amd.com>

On system with khugepaged enabled and user cases with THP buffer, the hmm_range_fault may takes > 15 seconds to return -EBUSY, the arbitrary timeout value is not accurate, cause memory allocation failure. Remove the arbitrary timeout value, return EAGAIN to application if hmm_range_fault return EBUSY, then userspace libdrm and Thunk will call ioctl again. 2024-05-08drm/amdkfd: Let VRAM allocations go to GTT domain on small APUsLang Yu
Small APUs(i.e., consumer, embedded products) usually have a small carveout device memory which can't satisfy most compute workloads memory allocation requirements. We can't even run a Basic MNIST Example with a default 512MB carveout. https://github.com/pytorch/examples/tree/main/mnist. Error Log: "torch.cuda.OutOfMemoryError: HIP out of memory. Tried to allocate 84.00 MiB. GPU 0 has a total capacity of 512.00 MiB of which 0 bytes is free. Of the allocated memory 103.83 MiB is allocated by PyTorch, and 22.17 MiB is reserved by PyTorch but unallocated" Though we can change BIOS settings to enlarge carveout size, which is inflexible and may bring complaint. On the other hand, the memory resource can't be effectively used between host and device. The solution is MI300A approach, i.e., let VRAM allocations go to GTT. Then device and host can flexibly and effectively share memory resource. v2: Report local_mem_size_private as 0.
