2026-02-23x86/headers: Replace __ASSEMBLY__ stragglers with __ASSEMBLER__Thomas Huth
After converting the __ASSEMBLY__ statements to __ASSEMBLER__ in commit 24a295e4ef1ca ("x86/headers: Replace __ASSEMBLY__ with __ASSEMBLER__ in non-UAPI headers"), some new code has been added that uses __ASSEMBLY__ again. Convert these stragglers, too. This is a mechanical patch, done with a simple "sed -i" command. For some mysterious reasons the GCC 8 and 9 preprocessor manages to sporadically fumble _ASM_BYTES(0x0f, 0x0b): $ grep ".byte[ ]*0x0f" defconfig-build/drivers/net/wireless/realtek/rtlwifi/base.s 1: .byte0x0f,0x0b ; 1: .byte 0x0f,0x0b ; which makes the assembler upset and all that. While there are more _ASM_BYTES() users (notably the NOP instructions), those don't seem affected. Therefore replace the offending ASM_UD2 with one using the ud2 mnemonic. Encoding a relative NULL pointer doesn't work for KASLR, when the whole kernel image gets shifted, the __bug_table and the target string get shifted by the same amount and the relative offset is preserved. However when the target is an absolute 0 value and the __bug_table gets moved about, the end result in a pointer equivalent to kaslr_offset(), not NULL. Notably, this will generate SHN_UNDEF relocations, and Ard would really like to not have those at all. Use the empty string to denote no-string. (Ab)use the static_call infrastructure to convert all: call __WARN_trap instances into the desired: ud1 (%edx), %rdi eliminating the CALL/RET, but more importantly, fixing the fact that all WARNs will have: RIP: 0010:__WARN_trap+0 Basically, by making it a static_call trampoline call, objtool will collect the callsites, and then the inline rewrite will hit the special case and replace the code with the magic instruction. The basic idea is to have __WARN_printf() be a vararg function such that the compiler can do the optimal calling convention for us. This function body will be a #UD and then set up a va_list in the exception from pt_regs. But because the trap will be in a called function, the bug_entry must be passed in. Have that be the first argument, with the format tucked away inside the bug_entry. The comments should clarify the real fun details. The big downside is that all WARNs will now show: RIP: 0010:__WARN_trap:+0 One possible solution is to simply discard the top frame when unwinding. A follow up patch takes care of this slightly differently by abusing the x86 static_call implementation. 2025-09-04x86,ibt: Use UDB instead of 0xEAPeter Zijlstra
A while ago [0] FineIBT started using the 0xEA instruction to raise #UD. All existing parts will generate #UD in 64bit mode on that instruction. However; Intel/AMD have not blessed using this instruction, it is on their 'reserved' opcode list for future use. Peter Anvin worked the committees and got use of 0xD6 blessed, it shall be called UDB (per the next SDM or so), and it being a single byte instruction is easy to slip into a single byte immediate -- as is done by this very patch. Reworking the FineIBT code to use UDB wasn't entirely trivial. Notably the FineIBT-BHI1 case ran out of bytes. In order to condense the encoding some it was required to move the hash register from R10D to EAX (thanks hpa!). Per the x86_64 ABI, RAX is used to pass the number of vector registers for vararg function calls -- something that should not happen in the kernel. More so, the kernel is built with -mskip-rax-setup, which should leave RAX completely unused, allowing its re-use. [ For BPF; while the bpf2bpf tail-call uses RAX in its calling convention, that does not use CFI and is unaffected. Only the 'regular' C->BPF transition is covered by CFI. ] The ENDBR poison value is changed from 'OSP NOP3' to 'NOPL -42(%RAX)', this is basically NOP4 but with UDB as its immediate. As such it is still a non-standard NOP value unique to prior ENDBR sites, but now also provides UDB. Per Agner Fog's optimization guide, Jcc is assumed not-taken. That is, the expected path should be the fallthrough case for improved throughput. Since the preamble now relies on the ENDBR poison to provide UDB, the code is changed to write the poison right along with the initial preamble -- this is possible because the ITS mitigation already disabled IBT over rewriting the CFI scheme. An example: If we have the following WARN_ON_ONCE() in kernel/sched/core.c: WARN_ON_ONCE(idx < 0 && ptr); Then previously _BUG_FLAGS() would store this string in bug_entry::file: "kernel/sched/core.c" After this patch, it would store and print: "[idx < 0 && ptr] kernel/sched/core.c" Which is an extended string that will be printed in warnings. 2024-08-06x86/traps: Enable UBSAN traps on x86Gatlin Newhouse
Currently ARM64 extracts which specific sanitizer has caused a trap via encoded data in the trap instruction. Clang on x86 currently encodes the same data in the UD1 instruction but x86 handle_bug() and is_valid_bugaddr() currently only look at UD2. Bring x86 to parity with ARM64, similar to commit 25b84002afb9 ("arm64: Support Clang UBSAN trap codes for better reporting"). See the llvm links for information about the code generation. Enable the reporting of UBSAN sanitizer details on x86 compiled with clang when CONFIG_UBSAN_TRAP=y by analysing UD1 and retrieving the type immediate which is encoded by the compiler after the UD1. In __WARN_FLAGS(), we had two asm statements (abbreviated): asm volatile("ud2"); asm volatile(".pushsection .discard.reachable"); These pair of statements are used to trigger an exception, but then help objtool understand that for warnings, control flow will be restored immediately afterwards. The problem is that volatile is not a compiler barrier. GCC explicitly documents this: > Note that the compiler can move even volatile asm instructions > relative to other code, including across jump instructions. Also, no clobbers are specified to prevent instructions from subsequent statements from being scheduled by compiler before the second asm statement. This can lead to instructions from subsequent statements being emitted by the compiler before the second asm statement. Providing a scheduling model such as via -march= options enables the compiler to better schedule instructions with known latencies to hide latencies from data hazards compared to inline asm statements in which latencies are not estimated. If an instruction gets scheduled by the compiler between the two asm statements, then objtool will think that it is not reachable, producing a warning. To prevent instructions from being scheduled in between the two asm statements, merge them. Also remove an unnecessary unreachable() asm annotation from BUG() in favor of __builtin_unreachable(). objtool is able to track that the ud2 from BUG() terminates control flow within the function. This helps preventing a BUG* or WARN* in some static inline from preventing that (or one of its callers) being inlined, so should allow gcc to make better informed inlining decisions. For example, with gcc 9.2, tcp_fastopen_no_cookie() vanishes from net/ipv4/tcp_fastopen.o. It does not itself have any BUG or WARN, but it calls dst_metric() which has a WARN_ON_ONCE - and despite that WARN_ON_ONCE vanishing since the condition is compile-time false, dst_metric() is apparently sufficiently "large" that when it gets inlined into tcp_fastopen_no_cookie(), the latter becomes too large for inlining. bugs As described in: 77b0bf55bc67: ("kbuild/Makefile: Prepare for using macros in inline assembly code to work around asm() related GCC inlining bugs") GCC's inlining heuristics are broken with common asm() patterns used in kernel code, resulting in the effective disabling of inlining. The workaround is to set an assembly macro and call it from the inline assembly block. As a result GCC considers the inline assembly block as a single instruction. (Which it isn't, but that's the best we can get.) Since the Intel SDM added an ModR/M byte to UD0 and binutils followed that specification, we now cannot disassemble our kernel anymore. This now means Intel and AMD disagree on the encoding of UD0. And instead of playing games with additional bytes that are valid ModR/M and single byte instructions (0xd6 for instance), simply use UD2 for both WARN() and BUG(). 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. 2017-07-20debug: Fix WARN_ON_ONCE() for modulesJosh Poimboeuf
Mike Galbraith reported a situation where a WARN_ON_ONCE() call in DRM code turned into an oops. As it turns out, WARN_ON_ONCE() seems to be completely broken when called from a module. The bug was introduced with the following commit: 19d436268dde ("debug: Add _ONCE() logic to report_bug()") That commit changed WARN_ON_ONCE() to move its 'once' logic into the bug trap handler. It requires a writable bug table so that the BUGFLAG_DONE bit can be written to the flags to indicate the first warning has occurred. The bug table was made writable for vmlinux, which relies on vmlinux.lds.S and vmlinux.lds.h for laying out the sections. However, it wasn't made writable for modules, which rely on the ELF section header flags. In addition to saving a few bytes over the generic infinite-loop implementation, this implementation traps rather than looping, which potentially allows for better error-recovery behavior (such as by rebooting). 2013-04-30dump_stack: unify debug information printed by show_regs()Tejun Heo
show_regs() is inherently arch-dependent but it does make sense to print generic debug information and some archs already do albeit in slightly different forms. This patch introduces a generic function to print debug information from show_regs() so that different archs print out the same information and it's much easier to modify what's printed. show_regs_print_info() prints out the same debug info as dump_stack() does plus task and thread_info pointers. * Archs which didn't print debug info now do. alpha, arc, blackfin, c6x, cris, frv, h8300, hexagon, ia64, m32r, metag, microblaze, mn10300, openrisc, parisc, score, sh64, sparc, um, xtensa * Already prints debug info. Replaced with show_regs_print_info(). The printed information is superset of what used to be there. arm, arm64, avr32, mips, powerpc, sh32, tile, unicore32, x86 * s390 is special in that it used to print arch-specific information along with generic debug info. Heiko and Martin think that the arch-specific extra isn't worth keeping s390 specfic implementation. Converted to use the generic version. Note that now all archs print the debug info before actual register dumps. Use the new unreachable() macro instead of for(;;);. When allyesconfig is built with a GCC-4.5 snapshot on i686 the size of the text segment is reduced by 3987 bytes (from 6827019 to 6823032).
