After commit 0edb555a65d1 ("platform: Make platform_driver::remove() return void") .remove() is (again) the right callback to implement for platform drivers. Convert all platform drivers below drivers/net/ethernet to use .remove(), with the eventual goal to drop struct platform_driver::remove_new(). As .remove() and .remove_new() have the same prototypes, conversion is done by just changing the structure member name in the driver initializer. In the ether3_probe function, a timer is initialized with a callback function ether3_ledoff, bound to &prev(dev)->timer. Once the timer is started, there is a risk of a race condition if the module or device is removed, triggering the ether3_remove function to perform cleanup. net: ethernet: seeq: Convert to platform remove callback returning void

The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is ignored (apart from emitting a warning) and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Eventually after all drivers are converted, .remove_new() is renamed to .remove(). Convert all Ethernet drivers from memcpy(... dev->addr_len) to eth_hw_addr_set(): @@ expression dev, np; @@ - memcpy(dev->dev_addr, np, dev->addr_len) + eth_hw_addr_set(dev, np) In theory addr_len may not be ETH_ALEN, but we don't expect non-Ethernet devices to live under this directory, and only the following cases of setting addr_len exist: - cxgb4 for mgmt device, and the drivers which set it to ETH_ALEN: s2io, mlx4, vxge. sgiseeq: convert to dma_alloc_noncoherent
